The head of Chuvashia, Oleg Nikolaev, reported a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Cheboksary during the night of November 26. He said that two residential buildings were damaged in the attack, and two residents were injured, one of them a teenager.
Residents of Cheboksary reported explosions in the city, according to Current Time. The outlet ASTRA geolocated five eyewitness videos from the site of the attack and subsequent fires in Cheboksary, concluding that the drones struck the grounds of the VNIIRE-Progress plant. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had previously stated that this facility produces “Kometa” adaptive antennas used, among other things, in Shahed-type attack drones, as well as in unified planning and correction modules for guided aerial bombs (KABs).
Nikolaev did not mention the strike on VNIIRE-Progress in his statement. Russia’s Defense Ministry did not mention Chuvashia in its morning briefing on downed Ukrainian drones over the country.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces later confirmed the strike on Cheboksary, noting that the target was the VNIIRE-Progress facility.
This is not the first time the plant has been targeted during Russia’s war against Ukraine. During the night of June 9, 2025, Ukrainian forces carried out a drone strike on the facility, causing a fire on the premises. Nikolaev reported a “temporary suspension of production to ensure employee safety.” The plant was also struck in July.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the attack on the facility on the night of November 26.
