Four killed in Kyiv as a result of Russian strikes

Four people were killed in Kyiv as a result of Russian strikes overnight on January 9, according to the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. The attacks involved drones and missiles. One of those killed was a medical worker. According to the latest reports, 24 people were injured, including medics and emergency service personnel.

In the Darnytskyi district, a drone fell into the courtyard of a residential building, partially damaging a single-story shop and the windows of a nine-story apartment block. In the Desnianskyi district, fires broke out on the roof of an 18-story residential building and in a five-story building. In the Dniprovskyi district, fires were reported in 16-story and nine-story residential buildings, and the blast wave partially destroyed the roof of a three-story residential house. In addition, in the Dniprovskyi district, drone debris fell onto a children’s playground in a residential courtyard and near a tram depot. In the Pecherskyi district, falling drone debris caused partial damage to the facade of a nine-story residential building; a non-residential multi-story building was also damaged, the outlet Nastoyashchee Vremya reports.

The city experienced disruptions to electricity and water supplies. One member of Ukraine’s parliament, cited by the media, said that heating and water supply were not functioning in the parliamentary building.

Mayor Klitschko later reported that about half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings—nearly 6,000 in total—remain without heating due to damage to critical infrastructure. Heating is being supplied to social institutions such as hospitals. In addition, as of the morning of January 9, more than 500,000 consumers in Kyiv and the Kyiv region were left without electricity.

Kyiv is currently facing difficult weather conditions, with a sharp drop in temperature and heavy snowfall. Klitschko urged residents who have the opportunity to temporarily leave the city to do so.

Overall, Ukraine was attacked overnight by more than 200 drones and 36 missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed the use of the Oreshnik medium-range missile system. According to Ukrainian authorities, this missile struck the Lviv region in western Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Russia carried out the strikes amid severe cold in order to further worsen people’s living conditions. He also said that a Russian drone damaged the building of the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv.
