Pro-European Party of President Maia Sandu Wins Parliamentary Elections in Moldova

The ruling pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), founded by Moldova’s President Maia Sandu, is leading in the parliamentary elections with 50.16% of the vote after 99.91% of ballots have been counted, according to data from the Central Election Commission. Voter turnout on September 28 was 52%.

In second place is the opposition Patriotic Electoral Bloc, with 24.19%. The bloc includes the Party of Socialists, backed by Moscow and led by former president Igor Dodon (who held office from 2016 to 2020), the Communist Party, as well as Heart of Moldova and Future of Moldova parties. They are followed by the pro-European bloc Alternative(7.97%), Our Party led by Renato Usatîi (6.20%), and Democracy at Home (5.62%).

In Russia, where two polling stations were opened (both in Moscow), 67.44% of voters supported the Patriotic Bloc. In China, Kazakhstan, Japan, India, Ukraine, Turkey, and most European countries, the ruling party is leading.

Moldova’s parliament is formed under a mixed electoral system: 50 seats are distributed by party lists and 51 seats in single-member constituencies. To enter parliament, blocs had to pass a 7% threshold, parties — 5%, and independent candidates — 2%. The new parliament must approve a candidate for prime minister and key government ministerswithin a month.

Sandu earlier stated that there had been numerous attempts to interfere in the electoral process and did not rule out that the results could be annulled. Dodon also spoke of “well-founded suspicions and signals” of possible interference, accusing the authorities. Commenting on police warnings about potential destabilization, the former president stressed that he would not allow it. He repeated his call for supporters to protest outside the parliament building on September 29.
