Duma passes law softening punishment for police officers for crimes

The State Duma excluded from the list of aggravating circumstances the fact that a crime was committed by an employee of the Interior Ministry. This is stated in the document of the bill.
The law amends Article 63 of the Criminal Code. The current version states that “the commission of an intentional crime by an employee of an internal affairs body” is recognized as an aggravating circumstance.
The bill was developed by deputies from the CPRF. An explanatory note to the bill states that the current provision of the Criminal Code “discriminates” against policemen. It does not apply to employees of other government agencies, for example, an aggravating circumstance is not considered if a criminal works in court, prosecutor’s office, FSB and other law enforcement agencies.
